People often ask how to properly care for Canyon Group® chenille robes to ensure a long life for their beloved robes. We hope you find the following information helpful!
First, it is important to understand how authentic chenille is made. This process was developed in the early 1800’s and eventually automated in the 1930’s in Dalton, Georgia. Whether by hand or machine, chenille is made by sewing lines of stitching on the underside of the fabric backing, which will become the inside of a robe. All authentic chenille will have lines of stitching visible on the underside or “wrong” side of the fabric. What makes chenille unique is that when the yarn comes through to the outside of the fabric, instead of looping back through the fabric backing to form a complete stitch, it is cut off, leaving a fluffy nap on the outside. The ends of freshly cut yarn will be blunt, but will become fluffier with each washing (more on this in a minute). So, now you know how authentic chenille should look! Authentic chenille is not microchenille or faux chenille. If you don’t see lines of stitching on the inside of your robe, it is NOT authentic chenille. Canyon Group® is the only chenille manufacturer remaining in the United States. All other chenille is imported and may not meet Federal flammability requirements for sleepwear.
Each Canyon Group® robe is washed at their production facility, prior to shipment. This helps remove the dark markings on the inside of the robe, which identify the location of the tufted designs, and fluffs the blunt ends of the freshly cut yarn. Because chenille is a unique fabric, it does require a bit of tender loving care. All Canyon Group® chenille robes should be washed inside out, in cold water, and on the delicate cycle. To further protect the chenille, it is best to wash your robe by itself. After being washed, dry your robe in the dryer on the lowest heat setting. I spritz my wet robe with 1/4 strength fabric softener before putting it in the dryer. This will allow for additional “fluff” while drying. Don’t be alarmed by lint in the dryer screen. It is normal for your chenille robe to shed some lint during the first few washings. Just like a big, fluffy bath towel when it is first washed…there will be lint in the dryer screen.
Once your chenille robe is washed and dried, it is ready to wear again! If there is lint clinging to the outside of your robe, simply brush it gently with a soft-bristled brush. If at any time, the tufted designs become too fluffy, you can always trim away any extra fluff…as if you are giving your robe a little haircut!
With gentle care, your Canyon Group® chenille robe will last many years! We have so many customers who call to replace a Canyon Group® robe they have worn and loved for over 10 years!
